The Season of Giving: Cookbook Update

As you all know, this last spring, Miss Violet & I originally conceived the III Patriot Community Cookbook as a fundraiser for the annual Idaho PatCon.

Miss Violet & I are very proud to announce that we are gifting the Cookbook idea -- in its entirety -- to Starvin' Larry as a fundraiser for his Mass Feeding Mobile Kitchen Trailer (MKT) ProjectIt is a worthy cause that we endorse wholeheartedly. This Cookbook will be a valuable marketing & funding tool for the MKT Project and will serve the entire III Patriot community.

Starvin Larry has decades of experience as a chef who also ran the kitchens of upscale hotels and country clubs.  No surprise that most of the recipes we received for our Cookbook were generously contributed by Starvin' Larry (aka GamegetterII) whose blog can be found at

Discussions with Starvin Larry, a few months ago, inspired us to completely re-envision the III Patriot Community Cookbook to include chapters specific to SHTF cooking, such as a chapter on the herbs and spices everyone should add to their personal preps so rice and beans become less boring.  Other chapters with tasty recipes made from basic preps as well as setting up an outdoor kitchen in a post-SHTF world, proper sanitation, even field dressing of game, will be written by Starvin Larry with assistance from one of his MKT Project colleagues who also has over three decades of experience as a chef.

Miss Violet & I are in complete agreement that Larry and the other chef helping to spearhead the MKT Project are, in fact, best suited as the authors, editors and publishers for this Cookbook.

In all fairness, since most of the content is being provided by Starvin Larry, it makes perfect sense that his MKT Project should be the sole beneficiary of the Cookbook project.

Larry has, therefore, been given our blessing to run with the III Patriot Community Cookbook idea.  (He may, of course, decide on another title.)

We have little doubt that everyone else who has contributed recipes for the III Patriot Community Cookbook will gladly support the MKT Project with the recipes they already submitted.

New Page on Tactical Combat Casualty Care

A new page on Tactical Combat Trauma Care has been added above on the Navigation Bar. This is a follow-up to Matt Grasha's talk on TCCC.

Please visit. We all need to continue learning, training, and cross-training.

More will follow on medical, COMMS, food preps, food storage, etc. There will be educational links on "Eating Wild" in your part of the country, highly recommended books on off-grid living, home brewing beer, etc.

PatCon Guests/Friends will have reason to return here over & over and to continue sharing knowledge.

After Action Reports by PatCon Guests

LT sporting the Max Velocity Versa Chest Rig and having a great time!
The 2015 Idaho PatCon was a huge success thanks to the quality of the people who joined us on the mountain here in St. Maries.

Bring extraordinary people together, success is guaranteed.

For me, the PatCon was filled with a vast spectrum of memorable moments:
- fun-filled laugther
- feasting with friends
- heartwarming connections
- great conversations
- excellent learning opportunities, and
- thrilling moments.

Perhaps the most "thrilling" moment is when Sergeant Major Mike (U.S. Army Retired) ordered my presence on the shooting range, suggested ;-) that I assume the prone position, and allowed me to shoot a couple rounds from his "oh-so-impressive" Savage Arms 10 BA rifle. (Mike, forgive me if I got the model wrong. Feel free to correct me.)  Thank you, Sir!

Preparing Our Guests for the Drive to St. Maries

In preparation for emailing driving directions to PatCon Guests, I drove west along Hwy 5 to make sure I had the correct mile marker for the turn-off. Any excuse will do to drive that way!  Actually drove an extra 10 miles farther than necessary just for the scenery.

It's been an exquisitely beautiful day! Sparkling sunshine. Blue skies with happy clouds. No humidity worth mentioning. And the rain-cleansed air rushing through the open windows scented with pine.
* * * * *

We look forward to receiving our Guests in only one more week.

This is "downtown" St. Maries with authentic old west architecture.

The epitome of charming.

There's something wonderful about life slowed down to a small town pace.

Raining In St. Maries

It's 66 degrees and raining heavily in St. Maries. This deep, soaking rain marks the end of an atypical dry-spell for this area.

The week ahead looks gorgeous. High temps will remain in the 80s. Overnight temps will dip into the 50s. Cooler on the mountain of course.

Chances are good the recent fire restrictions will be lifted.

The Planning Committee will keep our Guests apprised.

Remember to pack a fleece or heavy sweatshirt for bracing mountain mornings.

Counting Down the Days

St. Maries: Just Minutes from the Center of Town
Twenty-one days and counting! The excitement here in St. Maries is palpable. The Planning Committee and local tribe are looking forward to welcoming our Guests in just a few weeks. Final plans are being made. I was at Amazon looking at colorful gift bags and caught myself smiling with anticipation. This is going to be FUN!!!

We can hardly wait to see everyone.

We're extending Registration for another week. Some folks are still sorting out the details of their lives so they can join us.

AC & DC from NC emailed loads of ideas for fun kids' activities. Thanks!

Must say, our Guest List is IMPRESSIVE

When we promised, "...a spirited gathering of some of the most interesting folks you'll ever find in one place," we meant it!

Tempus Fugit

Tempus Fugit

Have perfect timing and catch the Great Cycles as they move through the natural world.
There is a tide in the affairs of men.
Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;
Omitted, all the voyage of their life
Is bound in shallows and in miseries.
On such a full sea are we now afloat,
And we must take the current when it serves,
Or lose our ventures.

Idaho PatCon: Always Room Here For The Lonely

Are you planning on attending our July PatCon? Bring your dancing boots. Way back in my post PatCon Update: What to Expect, I did promise some fun. Time to deliver. More below. So, read on. First some trivia and light commentary. I suspect my blogging privileges will be revoked any day now.

Little known fact: K's wife is a HUGE country music fan.
Lesser known fact: I wrote my first country song when I was about 11 years old. Didn't say it was a good country song. At that age, one hasn't lived enough life to write a good country song.

So, while Miss Violet & I continue our PatCon Planning, take a listen to one of my all-time favorites, Neon Moon by Brooks & Dunn. This video link is the live version. At bottom is a link to the studio version played in the movie (apologies) Urban Cowboy. Caution: If you have tender sensibilities, opt for the live version. The movie version contains hitting, punching, mean looks, kissing, exposed bellybuttons, suggestive mechanical bull riding & questionable choreography featuring cowboy-styled dancing.

Sign Up for the St. Maries "Neon Moon" Line Dance Flash Mob
As you listen to Neon Moon, imagine being part of a "four wall line dance" in a III Patriot flash mob. I can teach you the steps in 10 minutes flat. Practice 10 more. Voila, you're a pro! Attire: Demin. Cowboy hats optional. Men will do the line dance with thumbs hooked into belt loops -- so no fancy arm movements. Dignity gentlemen. Dignity. Our local Sheriff looks great in a cowboy hat. Sheriff, expect an invitation to lead us in our little line dance flash mob. St. Maries may never be the same.

Dancing without a permit. You Extremists! What next?

If you cannot attend the July PatCon, our dedicated videographer WILL record for private YouTube access. Maybe. ;-)

Here is the version of Neon Moon featured in Urban Cowboy.

Little thought about skills...

Have you ever thought about all the little skills that a person takes for granted?  Things we never do anymore because it is so cheap and easy to run to the store and buy the item or send it off to the factory to have it taken care of?  You know, like, sharpening a knife.  ;-)
